Exercise – Still life with colour used to evoke mood

I decided to mix a few objects up that I find quite difficult to paint, I have always found it difficult to paint glass objects. I have however always enjoyed drawing and painting roses. I did find this exercise quite enjoyable, I was able to experiment with colours that are not on display.

I firstly prepared the back ground using Acrylic, mixing crimson red with white, and using a sponge to apply the colour. I then used a soft charcoal pencil to draw the outline and some details. Using very few colours, but mixing with white to get the desired colours, it was great using bright colours to evoke mood.

The main difficulty I had painting this was the rose, I really struggled with depth and to get the rose to look like a rose. If I hadn’t of added the picture I feel you may not of got what the picture was.

I am however happy with the outcome of the wine decanter, it was great being able to do what I wanted to do with it and not really having to go for exact detail. Although you can see the placemat through the decanter I decided to go much lighter than it is in the picture.
